Live-classes platform for Find My Tutor: HD video, chat, sessions and payments

overview
live.findmytutorindia.com is the logged-in side of Find My Tutor, where students and tutors run their classes. I built it in Next.js with separate student and tutor dashboards, browser-based live video classes, chat, recordings, session management and payments.
problem
Once a student is matched with a tutor, the lessons themselves have to happen somewhere. Moving between third-party video links, chat apps and manual payment follow-ups was fragmented for both sides.
The goal was one platform where tutors set schedules, run classes, and manage sessions and payments, and students join from the browser with nothing to install.
approach
- 01I built the app in Next.js (App Router, Turbopack build) with separate signup, login and dashboard flows for students and tutors.
- 02I implemented live classes over WebRTC in the browser, with a WebSocket signalling layer for room presence and in-class chat.
- 03I added class recording, so sessions can be reviewed later.
- 04I integrated payments into the session flow, so booking and payment happen in one place.
- 05I added KaTeX so maths notation renders properly in class material and chat.

challenges
Real-time connections in the browser
WebRTC needs a signalling channel to set up peer connections. I used WebSockets for signalling and chat so joining a class stays in one tab.
Two roles, one app
Students and tutors need different permissions and screens. I split sign-in and dashboards by role, so each side only sees its own screens.
outcome
The platform is live at live.findmytutorindia.com, where tutors run classes and manage sessions and payments, and students attend from the browser.
